Awesome Awareness April

View this email in your browser
Welcome to our April Newsletter!
express News in Brief
We've been incredibly busy at express HQ and we are taking a break over Easter to relax and recharge the batteries. Hope you have a lovely break too.

Lots coming up at express. We are really pleased to offer another SEN Advice Session with Ed Davey. We are also really excited to be offering a new Drama group and we are extending our dramatherapy groups.

We had a fabulous day at express' annual Autism Conference on 22nd March.

Thank you Dean Beadle, Chris Bonnello, John Williams & to the Local Young People for their fabulous talks. Thank you to the Rose Theatre and to Cllr Julie Pickering RBK Mayor, The Fircroft Trust, Ruils, Curly Hair Project, Halsa, Balance, Kingston Carers & Your Healthcare for being part of our event. A big thank you to our amazing volunteers, Anna, Paula, Sam & Aisling. Also a big thank you to the lovely Grace, to Helen, Kay & Dorothy and to Lucy & Alice for the fabulous cakes.

Thank you to everyone who came along and helped make the day special.

'Another brilliant day thank you express cic! I was in awe of the local young people weren’t they wonderful? And it was lovely meeting other parents too'
'Thanks to you All at express for bringing all of these amazing speakers to Kingston and organising such an amazing event'

It was exhausting but we are already thinking about the next one

Huge thanks also to Nina & Susan at Burlington School who held a cake sale for express and raised an incredible £168 for us! We are very grateful to you all.

April is Autism Awareness Month
There is much criticism on social media (not directed at us) that 'autism awareness' is only for those able to speak for themselves and it doesn't represent the autism spectrum.

We know how wide the spectrum is and we aim to raise understanding and acceptance for everyone. We meet with and work with many families and just on our panel we have family members across the autism spectrum.
Whatever all our unique person's strengths and challenges are we will continue to acknowledge 'autism awareness' and help spread understanding because each and every one of them could not be loved more.

Please do scroll down for lots of information, events, groups and articles.

Your comments are always welcome - please click here to contact us. We look forward to hearing from you.

Home Education

Gill Hines and I have written several books about parenting, of which the best known in probably Whatever!. Last year we were commissioned to write a book about home-education and we have researched the subject in great detail, including the various reasons for deciding to take this step. We would very much like to talk to a few parents who are home-educating autistic children, either on their own or in a group which express are kindly willing to facilitate. Those we talk to would have total control over what appears in the book, and be fully consulted over the context in which it is used. Those who have spoken to us so far have commented that we are respectful, collaborative and that the experience of talking about their solution to the education of their young person has been both cathartic and enabled their voice to be heard. If you would be willing to talk to us please contact Alison Baverstock a.baverstock@kingston.ac.uk

Please Support Express
We have a small number of people who have very kindly set up Direct Debits to support express. We really appreciate their support. It's good to know we have some regular money coming in to contribute to the costs of running the office, providing services and support. We really do need more lovely people to consider setting up Direct Debits. It's a secure way to donate and we can claim Gift Aid!
You can donate from as little as £2 per month and make a HUGE difference to express.

Please take a look at https://localgiving.org/expresscic and see how you can help. Thank you.

We get invited to many events and we do our best to attend when we can. We are a very small team so sometimes it is not possible but do let us know if there is something you would like us to come along to.

Take a look below for details of our groups and referral forms. We are taking referrals for all key stages and we will look at matching similar age groups. Depending on eligibility and criteria you may be able to apply forAiming High Funding to support with costs.

We have been meeting lots of new parents, many who have only just found out about express. If you work in a school or other setting, please do pass on our details and spread the word. Parents really do benefit from the support of other parents who 'get it'. We offer telephone and email support as well as group and one to one support.

We are still working on providing even more evidence that there is a need for services! We really do need all parents/carers to take a few minutes to complete our survey.

Counselling Service
for parents/carers of children with special needs

express have launched a low-cost counselling service to parents and carers of children with autism and additional needs.

As parent/carers, life can be very challenging.  It can feel overwhelming trying to manage the needs of your child and balance this with all the other parts of your life; family, work, friends.  It is often hard to talk about your feelings with those close to you because you don't want to burden them or it can feel like they won't understand.  Parenting a child with additional needs also puts huge pressure on relationships with partners and families that can be difficult to resolve.  Counselling can offer a safe space where you can talk through all of your difficulties and anxieties.  A counsellor is trained to listen and support you in a non-judgemental way, creating a safe space for you to express your feelings, whatever they may be. By talking, worries and difficulties can often seem clearer and easier to manage.

The counselling sessions will take place at the express offices in Tolworth by counsellors with knowledge of autism and special needs. There would be a charge for sessions, on a sliding scale (£10- £30 per session) based on ability to pay. This is to cover our costs in delivering the service. We would offer 12 sessions initially, with the possibility of extending this to further sessions, depending on demand.

If you are interested in this service, please email counselling@expresscic.org.uk

Please pass on to anyone who may be interested.

More info. from Lorna our Yoga instructor - It is our aim to bring the calming and grounding benefits of yoga to children of all needs and abilities, giving them the chance to stretch, strengthen and relax, whilst providing them with stress management tools to set them up for the future. Regular yoga and mindfulness practice brings the physical and emotional body into balance. It helps to reduce stress and reactivity and takes us to a place of calm. I completed the Yoga and Mindfulness Course for children with Autism and ADHD in 2016 with The Special Yoga Foundation. Since then I have been providing 1:1 sessions offering the use of yoga and mindfulness therapeutically to children on the autistic spectrum. I am now very excited to be able to offer group sessions with express to children with autism, something I wish was available when my brother was growing up, as he takes part now and just loves it!

To sign up fill out a referral form and email toinfo@expresscic.org.uk and Lorna will be in contact to discuss further and arrange a taster session.

Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
Personal Independence Payment (PIP) is a benefit for working age people who have a disability or long-term health problem and have difficulty or need help with daily living activities and/or getting about.
PIP replaces DLA for people aged 16-64. In Great Britain this process started in April 2013 and in Northern Ireland it started from 20 June 2016. From these dates no new claims for DLA can be made by people aged 16-64, you have to claim PIP instead. The Government plans to have ended all existing DLA claims for people aged 16-64 by the end of 2018.

7 Emotional Wonders of the Special Needs Parenting World

When ‘Mum’ Seems Anxious‘I suspect the problem is her Mum who is really overanxious’. ‘I only spoke to Mum once but she seemed very over stressed’.

Children living in mental health hospitals should get help to get home. Always. Children and young people with mental health problems or autism should never have to live in inappropriate mental health hospitals.
Good inpatient care acts as a lifeline to many young people, who get the expert support they need to get better and return home.
But for others, including some with autism or a learning disability, their mental health can get worse in that care and they and their families can struggle to get help that is right for them.
We are calling on the Government to set out strong, enforceable rights to protect children in mental health hospitals, and their families, when they need it most. Please sign the petition to make sure the voices of young people and their families are heard. Always.
Anyone from the United Kingdom can sign this petition. We are asking for your address to verify that you live in the UK. Unfortunately people living in other countries cannot sign.

express News in Brief

The start of the year has been extremely busy meeting new families and planning our events for the year ahead. We have also had some interesting proposals to consider and we are working on our priorities going forward.

We are looking forward to our film night (by invitation - if you have not received this please contact us for further details) and our event at The Rose for World Autism Awareness Week, details below. Hope to see lots of you there!

Unfortunately we were not successful with the Aviva funding so please keep looking out for any funding opportunities for us to continue our work. In the current financial climate grant applications are becoming even more competitive. Our Children, "Managed" out of Mainstream and Denied Support

What Does "Fine" Mean?
By Rosie and Jo’s mum.
“When she’s in school, she’s fine…..”
“Once you’ve dropped her off, she’s fine.”
“She’s been fine all day.”
I’ve probably heard these phrases and other variations of them hundreds of times over the years.

express News in Brief

Happy New Year! Wishing you peace, love & autism understanding.

Hope you had a lovely Christmas break and that back to school/college goes well. We had an extremely busy December raising funds and attending events so a break was much needed! Thank you to everyone who came along and supported us.

The start of the year is looking just as busy with lots planned for the year ahead. We find out this month if we have been successful with the Aviva funding so keep everything crossed. In the current financial climate grant applications are becoming even more competitive. We spend much of our time fundraising to cover our increasing costs so if you have some expertise and time to spare we would love to hear from you!

Parent Carer Needs Assessments

Parent carers of children under 18 years of age have a stand-alone right to assessments and services under the Children’s and Families Act 2014. This is called a Parent Carer Needs Assessment (PCNA).

Parent Carer Needs Assessment forms are now available on AFC Local Offer website.

We need your experiences to help with Ambitious about Autism's upcoming campaign looking at the impact of the school system when it fails children and young people with autism. A big focus will be on exclusions but they have also been doing some new research on appeals and tribunals.

They will be launching soon but the campaign itself will run for 3 years as part of a wider campaign called Every Child which will be a partnership between Ambitious about Autism and the National Autistic Society.
What Ambitious are looking for at present are some good case studies and they have approached Express so we would like to invite you to a specific parent group at our offices to share your experiences in a secure environment. We will have Justin Cooke coming along from Ambitious about Autism who will be able to talk more about the campaign and how your experiences can help shape the findings.

From Ambitious about Autism:

You can change how education works for children & young people with autism.
At Ambitious about Autism we are passionate about making a difference to the children and young people with autism that attend our schools and colleges. We also want to improve things for every child and young person with autism in England.
That’s why we do policy work. Policy work and campaigning allows us to make a difference to all children and young people with autism by influencing national policy, organisation’s practice and individual’s attitudes and behaviours.
We will shortly be launching a campaign looking at the impact of the school system when it fails children and young people with autism. This will form part of a wider joint Every Child campaign, a partnership between Ambitious about Autism and National Autistic Society.
And you can make a difference by telling us your families story:
Real stories have more impact that any statistics we can offer decision makers, and they shape the way we work as an organisation. If you are happy to talk to our team about particular circumstances that made your life better, that challenged you or caused you stress – we’ll be grateful. We care about your family so we’ll treat your story with respect, and we’ll only use it in ways you feel comfortable with.
Thank you for your support,

Please register your interest by emailing us at info@expresscic.org.uk and we will be in contact to arrange a date. We really hope as many of you as possible will come along and share your experiences.

My Son's Not Rainman
We are incredibly proud and lucky to have John Williams as our Patron and friend. John does so much to help and support us. It's now our turn to help John by telling everyone about his book ( as he's rubbish at promoting himself 😉)
If you haven't yet read My Son's Not Rainman please do treat yourself. It will also make a fantastic Christmas present!
Available from all good bookstores and on Kindle & Audible.
An entertaining and often very funny read. Williams has a naturally comic touch ... [and there] are abundant laughs that will strike a chord with anyone with a disabled child or sibling (Daily Mail)
If you read one book this year, make it this one ... I haven't enjoyed reading a book this much in a very long time, if ever! (Your Autism Magazine)
[My Son's Not Rainman] isn't an attempt to teach readers about autism and it doesn't lecture. It's simply a heartfelt account of what it means to love a child on the spectrum ... it's inspiring, insightful and rib-tickling in equal measures (AuKids Magazine)
See the 5* reviews https://www.amazon.co.uk/My-Sons-Not-Rainman-…/…/ref=sr_1_1…

Rotary Santa Sleigh & Rotree
Express are delighted to have again been asked to participate in the Rotary club's Christmas fundraising events.

In addition we will be on the Santa Sleigh touring the Berryland's area on Wednesday 7th December from 6pm-8pm again joined by our wonderful Santa! If you are in the area do come out and say hello!
Our thanks to the Kingston Rotary Club!

You can change how education works for children & young people with autism.

Congratulations and Thank you to John Williams
John's book 'My Son's Not Rainman' was published on 1st September

We are immensely proud that John is our Patron and friend. John does an incredible amount to support Express and he has very kindly donated 5% of author profits to Express. Thank you so much John.

Thank you also to John and 'the boy' for sharing your story. We wish you both the success you truly deserve. May there be lasting change for all the dudes.

We love the book but don't just take our word for it - look at some of the 5* reviews

Northern Comic with the soul of a romantic poet
John Williams has the heart and soul of a romantic poet and teaches us to fall in love again with our autistic children and their different way of being..."we don't celebrate just 'being' enough" he writes in the introduction,"Yet often, it's in the smallness,in the everydayness of life that real beauty occurs".

It's a must read
This is a book about life, love and family. It's an extension of the blog of the same name. It will make you laugh, cry and inspire you. It is one family's experience of living with autism, of trying to make sense of a world which one of you sees differently. But mostly it's a book about love, of father to son and son to father.

John has been featured in The Guardian and on Waterstones Blog

'My Son's Not Rainman' will be back at the cornerHOUSE on 25th November 2016

My Son's Not Rainman:
One Man, One Boy with Autism, a Million Adventures

Released 1st Sept. A beautiful account of a father, son & grandfather. So excited for John.  We wish John & his beautiful boy lots of success.

This isn’t a story about autism. It’s a story about a young boy who happens to have autism, and there is a difference. John Williams is a stand-up comedian. He is also a single father and full-time carer for his son, who has autism and cerebral palsy. This is their incredible story. In 2012, John started a blog called My Son’s Not Rainman, a heartfelt and uplifting account of everyday life for him and ‘The Boy’. Following on from the blog’s amazing success, John felt there was still much more of their life, past and present, that he wanted to share. And not only of the challenges of bringing up a child who for too long was just dismissed as ‘difficult’, but also of the joy of living with someone who looks at the world in a unique way. My Son’s Not Rainman radiates warmth, care and passion, not to mention laugh-out-loud humour, on every page. It is a brilliantly different story about a brilliantly different boy.

ANIMAL SCHOOL

From the Wonderful Chris Bonnello at Autistic Not Wierd
As GCSE results come out today, I'd like to congratulate everyone who achieved something brilliant.

And by "brilliant", I don't mean simply pushing those letters as high up the alphabet as you can. It's more than that. For example, today I am congratulating a former student of mine who, despite certain difficulties specific to her, has managed to pass GCSE English. :D And trust me, that is something awesome.

Speaking as a former teacher, education shouldn't be about mere attainment (that is to say, getting high marks to the exclusion of anything else). Today should really be about personal achievement- what you achieved compared to what you set out to do. If you were expecting As and you got A*s, that's amazing- congratulations! Equally, if you were expecting Us and you got Gs, that's also amazing! And I'm certainly sending a long-distance high five to someone I know who managed just that, through some incredibly hard work and overcoming a bunch of disadvantages like a boss.

Because that's what personal achievement is. Don't waste today comparing yourself to others. Whatever you got- if it's an achievement in your own circumstances, you deserve all the congratulations that come your way. :)

Welcome to our August Newsletter!

express News in Brief

We have had an incredibly busy July, including going to Westminster for the launch of the Westminster Autism Commission Report - 'A Spectrum of Obstacles' and taking part in the Kingston Rotary Club, Dragon Boat Challenge!

Over August, we are taking a break (as much the Summer Holidays are a break!). We will be in the office for planned meetings only but we are still available by phone and email. Our groups will be back in September.

We are still working on providing even more evidence that there is a need for services! We really do need all parent/carers to take a few minutes to complete our survey

Please could we ask as many people as possible to sign up to easyfundraising. It doesn't cost you anything and you can raise money for express when you shop online. You can also set up a regular donation via direct debit on our local giving page.

Express is run by parent/carer volunteers. We have an excellent dedicated small team of volunteers but we really do need support with fundraising to help cover our increasing costs. Please do consider fundraising for us, however big or small it all helps! Some ideas ... Coffee mornings, cake sales, quiz night in your local, good as new sale or pamper evening. Please also nominate us in your local supermarket schemes or look out for community funds we can apply for. We really need your help!
Your comments are always welcome - please click here to contact us. We look forward to hearing from you.
For further information on our upcoming events you can visit www.expresscic.org.uk & for other events locally www.afclocaloffer.org.uk

best wishes,
Annette & Tracey

On 17th July Express launched our first ever dragon boat team at the annual Rotary Club challenge event in Canbury Gardens.

We are immensely proud that several young people on the autism spectrum took part. They were joined by teenagers volunteering from the National Citizenship scheme and some brave dads.

Having only met each other an hour beforehand, the team took to the water to race against other charity teams in three heats.

With each heat Team Express speeded up, achieving a magnificent best time of 1.10 seconds - an impressive result considering they were the youngest team in the competition!

Can you help show your support by sponsoring our intrepid young team?

We really want to ensure they know their efforts are fully appreciated and reach our £1,500 target. You can donate from £2 and if lots of people do we will reach our target.

We have a local giving fundraising page set up for the eventwww.localgiving.org/fundraising/expressdragonboatchallenge

Welcome to our July Newsletter!

express News in Brief

We are as always busy running the office, groups, fundraising and organising events. Our next big challenge is the Kingston Rotary Club, Dragon Boat Challenge! We need you! We have a number of young people on our team and we are looking for some more adults to join the team. See below for details.

In our other news, there has been so much going on! As you may already know we were due to go to the Growth Committee in March. However, the item was pulled from the agenda as a Freedom of Information request was submitted. It now transpires this was not from the person stated. Alongside this we have met again with the council, Adult Services, Children's Services and the Lead Commissioner and we are now required to provide even more evidence that there is a need for services! We need your help! Please do take a few minutes to complete our survey and share with other parents/carers.

We will keep you updated!

As you will know if you have been an Express supporter for a while we run 6 different support groups! We try to cover age groups and different issues over different times and days in the week so that hopefully there'll be one to suit you. We are also available in the office to drop in if you just need someone to talk to who gets it!

We run Rose Theatre talks and events bi-monthly which are always oversubscribed and where we meet many new parents. Dates vary so please do check the newsletter and our facebook page for details.

Our support group on the first Thursday of the month  (term time) has now changed by popular demand to be our Mum's Group at the same venue as our Dad's Group - the Waggon and Horses pub in Surbiton. The first one will take place on Thursday 7th July, 7.30-9.30pm. All mums, grandmas and female carers of young people with an autism spectrum condition are welcome to attend. Email info@expresscic.org.uk to register your interest.

We run a support group on the second Tuesday of the month 9.00-11.00am at the Express offices in Tolworth. Drop in straight from school drop off and/or bring your preschoolers along. This is an informal group for all parents and carers of young people on the spectrum whether pre-diagnosis, newly diagnosed or experienced with lots of support of what worked for you to share. This month it is on Tuesday 12th July.

Our popular Dad's Group is on the second Wednesday of the month and takes place at the Waggon and Horses pub in Surbiton. This month it is on Wednesday 13th July, 7.30-9.30pm. All dads, granddads and  male carers of young people with an autism spectrum condition are welcome to attend. Email info@expresscic.org.uk to register your interest.

We also run a specific support group for parents/carers of young people going through transition. Our TYA Group (Teens, Young Adults) runs on the third Monday of the month from the Express offices in Tolworth, 7.30-9.00pm. The TYA Group is a place where you can share similar experiences dealing with puberty, transition to secondary, college or work. These are parent/carer led and have proved much needed. Our next group is on Monday 18th July.

Finally, we run a group at Moor Lane on the last Tuesday of the month (term time) 1.00-2.30pm.

In addition we run an EHCP and DLA support service by appointment only. These are very specific 1:1 support to help you through the process. Email info@expresscic.org.uk to arrange an appointment.

Please do let us know what you like to see in the newsletter, what you would like to see more of or less of. Have a look at the links, we try to include as many informative articles as possible.
