The Express Offer

Express is an independent user led voluntary sector organisation supporting autistic people and their families.
We are not a commissioned service. We are unfunded and therefore not restricted by boundaries so we are open to all and all are very welcome to attend any of our events or groups.

Below is a summary of the services we provide and support groups we run. All our services are run by qualified counsellors or drama therapists experienced in working with autistic children and young people. All our groups have an assessment process prior to joining to ensure the service is providing the best support for both the individual and the group.

In brief we offer:
Counselling for parent/carers
Creative Therapy both 1:1 and in small groups for autistic young people aged 5+
Drama Club for autistic young people aged 8+
BUDs pre-school group for autistic young people aged 3+
Siblings groups

In addition we offer peer support in the form of a Mum’s group, Dad’s group and a specific PDA group.

If you are interested in any of our services please contact us for our register form and a referral form at info@expresscic.org.uk.

'Express Zoom sessions help young people to feel connected to the outside world and offer a space to explore some ways to manage the worries that we are all currently faced with. Sessions can help with confidence and self esteem, social interaction and it is often helpful to speak with someone who is impartial and have some time and space of their own.'

We are really pleased to be able to offer subsidised 1:1 online sessions for autistic children and young people. The secure Zoom sessions provide a continued connection, a safe space to express and an impartial person to check in with each week.
Some of our young people report they find the sessions helpful as a way to feel ‘connected with the outside world'

If your young person is already known to us (if not known to us you will need to complete a referral) and would like to have a 1:1 Zoom session please email jen@expresscic.org.uk You will need to download the Zoom App or use the web version, it is free to use.

'I've been having sessions over zoom throughout the last few months. 2020 has been a really tough year and having someone to talk to has really made a difference. It's really helped me.'

'The One to One Zoom sessions have provided my child with invaluable support during a very difficult time, when access to other sources of support has been very limited. Having someone to speak with and connect with outside the immediate family has made a real difference to my child and us as a family. Express do amazing work!'
Counselling Service for parents/carers of children
with additional needs and disabilities

As parent/carers, life can be very challenging. It can feel overwhelming trying to manage the needs of your child and balance this with all the other parts of your life; family, work, friends. It is often hard to talk about your feelings with those close to you because you don't want to burden them or it can feel like they won't understand. Counselling can offer a safe space where you can talk through all of your difficulties and anxieties. A counsellor is trained to listen and support you in a non-judgemental way, creating a safe space for you to express your feelings, whatever they may be.

This is offered as a low cost service.

If you are interested in this service, please email: counselling@expresscic.org.uk

'Towards the end of the sessions, I felt more able to predict/understand the anxieties that I was experiencing so that I could put in strategies to help me move forwards'

'I really appreciated the counselling sessions and have felt they were greatly beneficial'

' I felt more confident that I was beginning to understand the connection of historic issues that had been impacting on me in the present'

THE express PROPOSAL!

In 2014 Kingston Council voted unanimously to support our proposal to pursue a 'community asset transfer' to take ownership of the site of the former Fairmead Day Nursery for our community hub.
Thank you to all those who attended the public gallery to support us - much appreciated!

Keep spreading the word to make people more aware of the work we do and our vision for the hub. You can view a copy of our leaflet here.

We are still working towards achieving this...

Justice For LB #LbBill

Picture
LB is short for Laughing Boy, the name used online for Connor Sparrowhawk.
Connor was a fit and healthy young man, who loved buses, London, Eddie Stobart and speaking his mind.
Connor had autism and epilepsy.
On the 19 March 2013, he was admitted to hospital (Slade House Assessment and Treatment Unit run by Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust).
He drowned in the bath on 4 July 2013. An entirely preventable death.
